MSAS provides a safe and supervised environment after school that supports and provides extended academic enrichment and recreational activities for youth in grades 6-8. The program is school-based and free to any student enrolled in the participating schools.
Youth involved in MSAS benefit from a safe, supervised, and structured environment, the opportunity to participate in a variety of classes to learn, develop and enhance life-long skills, and from the influence from positive adult role models (both volunteers and staff) outside of their family and school.
MSAS runs Monday through Thursday, from the time students are released from the regular school day until 5:00 pm. Activities include academic help, sports, cooking classes, job skills, community service projects and various clubs. Students, at no cost to them, are also offered one field trip each week which includes bus transportation and a visit to their local YMCA facility, tours of museums, local colleges and universities, theatre productions and recreational facilities.
For more information on Middle School After School, contact Elizabeth Avelar at 264-4066 ext. 230.
STARS Elementary After School Program
Serving 1,800 youth, the YMCA STARS Program provides fun, healthy activities for elementary children, in a safe and supervised environment. The STARS Program is a FREE after-school program offered to students who attend low-income elementary schools and are in grades first through fifth.
Once a week, students are picked up following the regular school day and transported with YMCA staff to the Central Branch by YMCA buses. Once at the YMCA, students can choose what activity they would like to participate in like gym games, swimming or crafts. Once the day has ended, students are taken back to their school to wait for a parent to take them home. For more information on the YMCA S.T.A.R.S. Program, contact Tyrone Baker at 264-4066 ext. 215.
